Achieving Italy’s solar energy potential and meeting the 2050 net-zero target requires addressing critical challenges in regulatory frameworks, grid infrastructure, and technology-driven supply chains.

The first part of this session will explore the key trends shaping the photovoltaic global supply chain and the current competition among the best performing technologies – TOPCon, back contact (BC) and heterojunction (HJT). The discussion will involve scientists, manufacturers and PV experts and will be aimed at supporting business owners, investors and stakeholders in making investment decisions and in project planning. Current PV component prices will also be analyzed, with both short-term and long-term prospects being part of the discussion. Furthermore, our experts will discuss PV system costs and M&A practices.

The second part of the session will explore the key trends shaping the renewable sector in Italy, starting with the remarkable growth in solar utility-scale solar installations in 2024. Despite this momentum, fewer large-scale projects are expected to become operational in 2025, primarily due to delays in project development as stakeholders await incentives under the FER X mechanism. If FER X auctions are launched as anticipated, the first wave of construction could begin by late 2025 or early 2026, with completion for many projects likely by 2027. However, the ability of EPC contractors to manage the surge in new projects will also play a significant role in the sector’s trajectory. The panel will also address the regulatory bottlenecks impeding progress. The current frameworks, including the DL Agricoltura and DM Aree Idonee, have added complexity to the permitting process, risking delays in new investments and potentially impacting installed capacity by late 2026. Panelists will further examine the financial landscape, including investment trends, M&A activity, and the growing secondary PV market. Discussions will emphasize how innovation, policy reforms, and industry consolidation can unlock the next phase of growth.
