NetZero Makers Issue 1 preview

WELCOME TO NETZERO MAKERS

We welcome you to the preview of the first issue of NetZero Makers, the newsletter realised together with ECCO, the Italian climate think tank, our knowledge partner, for stakeholders, professionals and companies committed to the path towards energy transition and decarbonisation, which will accompany us fortnightly to NetZero Milan.

The event, organised by Fiera Milano from 14 to 16 May 2025 at the Allianz MiCo, will offer an important opportunity for discussion, thanks to the Milan NetZero Summit and the Vertical conferences, but also an opportunity to offer visibility to all the players – technology producers, consultants, green financial realities and institutions – that will support the industrial world in achieving the 2030-2050 objectives.

At a time when the urgency to act for decarbonisation is both a need for competitiveness and a response to the climate challenge, NetZero Milan proposes itself as a multi-sectorial and multi-disciplinary platform to respond to the needs of an increasingly challenging context and to act as a catalyst for new entrepreneurial dynamics.

NetZero Milan was born in an unprecedented historical context. 2025 will be a “symbolic” year: we will be 25 years away from the 2050 target for zero emissions and only 5 years away from the EU’s intermediate 2030 targets. In addition, it will be the year of COP30 in Brazil, where new international commitments will be set to meet the Paris Agreement targets.

The event will bring together leading energy companies and decarbonisation solutions, off-takers, analysts, green finance and policy makers. It will be an opportunity to take an in-depth look at technology trajectories, understand European market trends, create strategic connections and contribute to the emergence of innovative ideas and solutions to ensure the competitiveness of European manufacturing sectors while achieving climate goals.

In this sense, we are working to offer an opportunity for discussion, but also for concrete actions for the development of new business models capable of driving forward the decarbonisation process and maintaining the competitiveness of our industrial fabric.

I hope that the next issues will become a useful tool for the entire NetZero Makers community, during which we will deepen the scenario with original content and direct testimonies from relevant contexts such as COP29. In addition, we will gradually unveil content and news that will be waiting for us during the event. We therefore hope that NetZero Milan will become an essential appointment for all.

NetZero to 2050: competitiveness and decarbonisation in Europe

The European Green Deal, unveiled in December 2019, is a quasi-revolutionary plan that charts a course to decarbonise the entire European economy. This is instrumental in achieving climate neutrality (Net Zero) by 2050, while creating the conditions for more economic growth and prosperity for the continent and all its citizens.

More recently, on 9 September 2024, the so-called Draghi Report on Competitiveness highlighted how ‘decarbonisation could be an opportunity for Europe, both to take the lead in new clean technologies and circularity solutions, and to shift energy production towards safe and low-cost clean sources, of which the EU has a generous natural endowment’, suggesting the need to link decarbonisation and planning more firmly to competitiveness.
