Volvo Trucks Italia: multiple technologies to achieve zero emissions — the strategy at NetZero Milan

Volvo Trucks Italia: technological plurality to achieve zero emissions — the strategy at NetZero Milan

A concrete path toward zero emissions, told by one of the leading players in sustainable mobility.

Volvo Trucks Italia will take center stage in Mobility Climate Champion, the initiative by NetZero Milan – the Expo-Summit organized by Fiera Milano and dedicated to industrial decarbonization. From May 14 to 16 at Allianz MiCo, the event will spotlight the “pioneers” of sustainable freight transport who are already leading the transition toward low-emission solutions. In a country where 87% of goods still travel by road, reducing the impact of heavy-duty vehicles means generating positive effects across the entire industrial sector.

Volvo Trucks has long embraced this path, leveraging a diversity of technologies to accelerate progress toward European climate goals. “For us, environmental respect is a core value, alongside safety and quality,” says Giovanni Dattoli, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks Italia. “Since the 1970s, we’ve reduced air pollutant emissions from our new vehicles by over 90%, cut fuel consumption and climate impact by 40%, and today we are focused on the ultimate challenge: reaching zero CO₂ emissions from the entire vehicle fleet by 2050. That’s why we’ve developed a roadmap, which we will share at NetZero Milan. Our guiding principle is ‘technological plurality’.

Our Euro 6 diesel engines have halved particulate emissions, cut nitrogen oxides by nearly 80%, and are also compatible with biofuels like HVO, which help reduce carbon footprint. Our LNG-powered vehicles ensure a significant emissions reduction—and when powered by bio-LNG, this reaches up to 100%. Since 2018, we’ve also been pioneers in electromobility (BEVs), which will play an important role in this transition. We are currently testing hydrogen-powered Fuel Cell vehicles and hydrogen internal combustion engines, both scheduled for launch in the second half of this decade.

As manufacturers, we are also committed to fully sustainable production processes: around one-third of the materials in a new Volvo truck come from recycled sources, and up to 90% of the truck can be recycled at end-of-life. We were the first in the world to produce zero-emission vehicles in Belgium and Sweden. This sustainability culture is expanding rapidly across our global network and embraced by a growing number of our dealerships.”

With a broad and practical vision, Volvo Trucks Italia confirms its role as a leading player in the sustainable transition of heavy-duty mobility, bringing an authoritative voice to NetZero Milan on the topics of electrification, hydrogen, and low-impact production chains.
